Situation
Woya Digital was approached by an international financial services client supporting high net wealth individuals across Europe and USA.
The project was commercially sensitive and damaging to the company reputation. Potentially slanderous comments had previously been made on a popular chat forum, however as it had gained some traction it was now appearing on Google searches under the company brand name.
Due to the trust proposition required for investment style firms, it was business critical to remove or suppress the multiple negative links now appearing online.
Response
Research and strategy is critical for reputation management. Negative suppression is not an exact science, but the technique of flooding key terms with positive news and PR is well-established. Using an integrated approach over an initial 6 month period we engaged multiple methodologies:
- Open dialogue with offending publications to remove or amend
- Digital PR campaign across key ranking publications consistently spread
- Guest post campaign in selected titles
- Key directory submissions
- Promoting existing ranking positive articles
- Linking strategies
- Key executive promotion and profile optimisation
- On-site optimisations
In addition, we implemented regular full-load reporting, including press coverage, search engine rankings and online mentions, sentiment to measure and accurately predict results and success.
Result
The initial strategy to engage direct with the negative reputation was partially successful. The publication amended the comments to be less damaging, but refused to debrand the threads. Caution was required here to not create more traffic to the posts, and unintentionally increase ranking and awareness.
The audit and analysis supported the plan creation to maximise positive impressions around key phrases.
- First 3 months we could see the strategic direction take affect and the negative mentions decrease in rankings.
- Next 2 months the articles were successfully positioned on page 2 and declining.
- Further 3 months maintenance work ensured reinforcement and stability.
